How do APS devices work?

At an APS-equipped intersection, a locator tone helps pedestrians find the signal’s push button. When the button is pressed, the device emits an audible message (such as “wait” or a percussive crossing tone) and may also vibrate, indicating when it is safe to cross. The system includes tactile arrows to help users orient themselves in the correct crossing direction. APS devices are installed on or near crosswalk signal poles and are activated by pressing a button.

How are APS installations prioritized?
APS are installed at intersections throughout the City of Chicago, especially where:

There are public requests for APS.

There are conditions that may make crossing more difficult for people with vision disabilities, such as where there are exclusive pedestrian phases, mid-block crossings, T-intersections, and other complex features.

There is proximity to various public amenities such as public transportation stations and transfer points, hospitals, police stations, major pedestrian attractions like major shopping areas, major cultural venues, college campuses, organizations serving people with visual disabilities and seniors, and government buildings.

Requests for new APS are prioritized based on date received.

Where can APS be installed?

APS can be installed at any signalized intersection with pedestrian signals. APS can only be installed within the City of Chicago. APS cannot be installed at non-signalized locations such as an all-way stop-controlled intersection or an unsignalized midblock crossing.
How can I request new APS or report issues for existing APS devices?

Anyone can make requests for new or existing APS at specific signalized intersections through 311. Anyone can also request APS in person at aldermanic offices or the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (“MOPD”). At minimum, the accurate name of the cross streets is needed to properly address the requests. Requestors will receive a response within 6 months of receipt and can track the status of the requests at the Track APS Installation Requests page.
